〈連繫〉放映座談會/ "Connected" screening and discussion

互聯網的發展、智能手機的演進，以至社群網站的出現，通訊與資料儲存科技，把我們生活的一切都跨越時空地連結在一起。在這個背景下，錄映太奇把美國獨立紀錄片〈連繫〉(另譯為：愛的進化論) 帶來香港放映，電影探討的不止於現今科技網絡發達的現象，還有早在互聯網盛行之前，存在於人們之間各種看見與看不見的連繫。3月28日，錄映太奇將於牛棚藝術村13號室舉行〈連繫〉放映，映後更設有由中文大學教授Katrien Jacobs帶領的討論環節，歡迎各位加入參與〈連繫〉的討論！

Technology has been leaping multiple boundaries at rapid speeds. From the development of the internet, to the evolution of smart-phones, and even to the new emergence of social networks, and online storing technology, our everyday lives have been connected in a way that we may no longer truly understand.

Coming on 28th March, Videotage presents the independent documentary film "Connected". The film explores how the human connection has evolved following technological development.

The screening will take place in Videotage (Unit 13, Cattle Depot Artist Village, 63 Ma Tau Kok Road), after which it will be followed by a discussion led by Professor Katrien Jacobs. We welcome everyone to join in and be connected!

由創辦威比獎(The Webby Award)到熱心支持全國離線日(The National Day of Unplugging)，導演Tiffany對現今人與人互相聯繫又不可分割的關係可謂非常關注及敏感。2011年，導演的父親，一個腦科學者及手術家，患上了腦癌，而她自己亦有了高風險的懷孕，在這個其家庭出現巨大變化的一年，導演拍攝及製作了是次影片＜連繫＞，片中充滿感情豐富的家庭寫照，以及導演對連繫的重新反思。

導演參考了她父親對人類腦部的研究，並利用具象徵性的動畫及歷史片段，建構了一條人類文明發展的簡史，來探討早在互聯網盛行之前，存在於人們之間各種看見與看不見的連繫，箇中觸及到環境問題，消費主義，人口增長，科技發展，人權及環球經濟等重大議題。從導演個人的家庭生活，到其對連繫宏觀的探討與反思，片子說明了連繫的概念並不止於自己身邊所愛的人，而是像電影開始的引子－－當你接觸任何一件單一的物件，你會發現它連繫著其他所有東西。

卡特里恩 · 雅各布從美國馬里蘭大學獲得了比較文學與媒體博士學位。 作為一位學者及媒體藝術家，她致力探討數字網絡於人們經驗身體，藝術與性慾的角色。她亦非常關注在香港以及在全球媒體環境下的色情資訊，審查制度及媒體激進主義，並對這些議題廣泛進行演講及出版。

Katrien received a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature and Media from the University of Maryland at College Park. She has continued to work as a scholar and media artist who investigates the role of digital networks in people’s experiences with the body, art, and sexuality. She has lectured and published widely about pornography, censorship and media activism in Hong Kong and global media environments.

Data Gaga is a series of distributed events that focuses on data as art, network technology and collaborative creativity. Detoured from the common exhibition practice of showcasing individual works,Data Gaga is a distributed realisation of concepts.

Participating projects:

Soundtracking John Cage 4”33” facilitated by Steve Hui (Nerve) is a remake of John Cage’s 4’33” by 10 Hong Kong artists, designers, musicians and filmmakers.
Botanicalls (HK version) is an example of ‘the Internet of Things’, which plants talk via Twitter. The original project idea is from Kate Hartman, Rob Faludi and Kati London, botanicalls.com.
unCloud opens up knowledge sharing and social sites that may otherwise not be reachable on the Internet. It is a project by Rui Guerra and David Jonas, intk.com/uncloud.
Emergence composes of an array of interconnected and self-organising modules that mimics the emergent behaviour of dynamic, complex systems in nature. It is a project by Miu Ling Lam.

Data Gaga is part of Wikitopia, a biennial for network culture, initiated in 2010 by Videotage, a non-profit video and media art organisation.

Following the ARRIVALS exhibition, Videotage is pleased to present ‘DEPARTURES’, a live sound performance by our current artist-in-residence Marco De Mutiis featuring sound artist Paul Yip. By using various set up of microphones, effects and software programming, the artists simply transforms ARRIVALS (a kinetic installation re-engineered from an old analogue split-flap departure board) into a unique sound instrument.

The live performance will feature a dialogue between the artists and the ARRIVALS artificial intelligence system. By mixing the original sound of the installation and the ”Transformed Sound” by the effects, the unique pure acoustic sound and the electro-acoustic artificial sound will echo into a special digitanalogue symphony.

The communication between these two very different counter parts present a language that merges a variety of mediums, such as text, memory, computer coding, acoustic and electronic sound, giving the audience a unique experience.

About the Artist:

- Marco De Mutiis

Marco De Mutiis works with different digital and analog media, exploring the relation between virtual and physical world, and between perception and communication. His current interest focuses on the exploration of the concept of control of the transient and the ephemeral. He is currently working as a Research Associate at City University of Hong Kong – School of Creative Media.

- Paul Yip

Back from Montreal Paul is a sound artist and experimental musician. He collaborates with artists from various disciplines in projects such as theatre/dance music, sound installation, soundtrack and organizing music events. Taking part in bands like Milkteeth, The Sinister Left, Tree Phoning, feimin, PAL PAL…etc, he performs with acoustic/electronic instruments not limiting to vintage synth, sampler and effects. Being as a music consultant he has been picking and mixing tasty tunes for events, prestigious restaurants, wine and fashion stores including Lane Crawford, Joyce, The Pawn, Nespresso, Boudeaux Etc. His mission with [Feel Music Experimental Lab] is to promote and spread sound art, experimental and improvised music.

Reynold Reynolds is one of the most daring and explorative experimental filmmakers to be seen in recent years within America. Preferring to use a 16mm and Super 8mm film to shoot, his works are normally considered as experimental and investigative towards the human experience.

"The Ability of the artist to explore and manipulate a delicate balance between different functions of mind such as memory, voluntary, and involuntary actions, delicately approaches an untouchable border line between space and time." - Curator Lara Pan

The solo show will feature five works: "The Drowning Room", "Burn" and "Secret Trilogy". The first two works are collaborative works between Reynold Reynolds and Patrick Jolley, which presents us a world where the actors are for a while, living in a moment of cinematographic "limbo". Representation is left behind and focus is on the confrontation of viewer with a primary stimulus of physical experience. "Secret Trilogy" features a three-part cycle exploring the imperceptible conditions that frame life. This trilogy is comprised of "Secret Machine", "Secret Life", and "Six Easy Pieces". Imagery of this trilogy has been fragmented by a mysterious process of creation inspired by the images of life breaking through regular flow of time, describing mystery of the strange forces of existence.

This is the first time VMAC (Videotage Media Art Collection) invites an overseas artist and guest curator for an exhibition.

The Artist

Reynold Reynolds was born in 1966 in Central Alaska. During his undergraduate schooling at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Reynolds studied Physics receiving a Bachelor's degree under the professorship of Carl Wieman (Physics Nobel Laureate 2001). Changing his focus to studio art he remained two more years in Boulder to study under experimental filmmaker Stan Brakhage. After moving to New York City Reynolds completed an M.F.A. at the School of Visual Arts. Influenced early on by philosophy and science, and working primarily with 16mm as an art medium, he has developed a film grammar based on transformation, consumption and decay. Detailed evolving symbols and allusive references create a powerful pictorial language based on Reynolds' analytical point of view. His depiction of people often makes us aware of the small frames we use to understand reality. By subtly altering the regular conditions of life and watching their effects, he transfers the experimental methods of science to filmmaking, where he frames reality in his laboratory and changes one variable at a time to reveal an underlying causality.

The Curator

Lara Pan is a freelance curator, art critic, and contributing writer for Art Pulse Magazine based in New York. She worked at the SKC Gallery in Belgrade from 1989 and 1991. Lara Pan was exhibition curator of Torre by Wim Delvoye at Peggy Guggenheim Museum Collection coinciding with the Venice Biennale (2009); among other shows she has curated are Pandora's Sound Box for Performa, New York (2009); Braco Dimitrijevic (retrospective), White Box, NYC (2011); and When the Fairy Tale Never Ends for Ford Project, NYC (2011). In 2005, Lara Pan founded The New Art Project, a curatorial project with a main interest to find and innovate the different contemporary methods of the spatial interventions between several types of artistic supports and their habitat.

Renowned Paris-based visual/sound artist and electronic musician PANASTHETIK.(aka Jason Jagello) will present a cool mix of contemporary bass at Videotage that will make you dancing till dawn!

Videotage is situated in Cattle Depot Artist Village, a site formerly used as a slaughterhouse. It has long been a hotspot for underground gigs and experimental media art. With mind-numbing beats and dazzling video art by PANASTHETIK, and other visuals by two aspiring Hong Kong artists projected throughout the evening, there is nothing else like partying in this unique space!

The party is also a forerunning benefit event of "XV: Hong Kong [Re-] Mixed", a live audiovisual and audiotextual performance happening this upcoming May, a collaboration of PANASTHETIK, together with Janice Poon, a prominent Hong Kong theatre artist. All the income will be donated to the production after deducting the expenditures necessary.
