The moving images and still pictures examine an interdisciplinary timeline. By exploring time, whether it is tangible, identifiable, or unpredictable, we approach the subject of time in our individual and collective ways. We throw ourselves passionately into the unknown future in every 1/30 or 1/24 seconds, the blending of the film frame produces an illusion of moving images, whether they are in low resolution or high resolution, these images reflect our very subconscious mind. These moving pictures are being displayed on our personal and collective timeline, the hour time change may have thrown many of us off our so called normal schedules. As our mind drifts slowly into the other time zones, a sudden image flashes across our hard disks. We see the dancing rhythm, we hear the time difference. The exhibition is a mind bending of Insomnia, an experience of time differences, and an art performance about shoving off into the unknown.

About the Artist/Speaker:
LAM, Miu Ling is a media artist. She is currently an assistant professor in the School of Creative Media at CityU where she teaches coding for interactivity, physical computing and wearables, and directs the Wearable Innovation Lab. She is also leading a research group focuses on innovative 3D displays. She is an art advisor in Hong Kong Arts Development Council and a director of Videotage.
Wearable electronics are gradually governing the world. Whether it is a personal intelligent health monitoring strap or smartwatch, these portable electronic products will always measure the users and their surroundings. Videotage conceives new media art as a cultural movement that brings art and technology productions to nodes of intersections in the digital and network era. To promote a free and open DIY culture, this artist talk and workshop will introduce wearable technology concepts and technology development. In order to enhance participants’ interest to wearable technology, the artist will guide participants to sew ‘technology’ into their clothes.
About the Workshop:
What can you do with some LEDs and a needle? Soft Circuit! Creating WEARABLE electronic circuits by sewing with needles and threads is the craftiest and geekiest thing you can do. It is a unique way to engage diverse audience, especially female and young people, who are normally not tech-lovers to do interesting odd things with electronics. In this event, the artist will share her experience in crafting DIY sensors, actuators and wearable devices using non-traditional materials. She will also show participants how to create a wearable device that consists of programmable LEDs and can unveil hidden messages or patterns based on human's persistence-of-vision. All participants will receive a set of materials for FREE, which includes wearable microcontroller board, sewable LEDs, conductive thread, and battery.
To be prepared by participants:
• laptop computer
• a piece of garment that can be worn around the wrist (wrist sweatband/glove/mitten/sock/long-sleeve clothes/fabric wrist brace, etc)

PAPAY GYRO NIGHTS ART FESTIVAL / video art, sound art, experimental film, music and architecture / is taking a place in unique settings of extreme remoteness of the island Papa Westray (aka Papay, or Papey in Meiri), and in the time of extreme winter weather conditions. The idea of the festival has originated from the ancient Papay tradition of The Night of The Gyros (or Gygr, Gryla, Grylur, Grøleks, Skeklers as its know in other Nordic countries), which till the beginning of 20s century was celebrated on the island in the first full moon of February. Against as reconstructing what is gone and almost forgotten, the Festival is a reflection on the folktale, the island’s landscape and heritage, as well as interpretation of tradition and ritual, through new developments in art and architecture. The Festival is a Research lab, learning hub and the place for a discussion about interaction between new media and ideas in relation to tradition, ritual and island’s landscape and heritage. During the Festival the Island is transformed into the art space and artworks are screened and exhibited in old farm buildings, boat house, workshops, ruins and open landscape.

Absorption and Explosion, an exhibition on media and contemporary art which features two of the most promising Japanese artists of our time, Nobumasa Ikemori (Nobu) and Eiki Mori. Listed by Art Basel 2014 as a concurrent exhibition, Absorption and Explosion will run from 13th to 31st May.
Eiki Mori is an artist who has hosted over 20 exhibitions in major cities including Tokyo, Osaka, London, Taipei, Dusseldorf, Vienna, and San Giovanni Valdarno of Italy. His masterpieces include the reputed “Tokyo Boy Alone” and “Intimacy”, which brings superb sensitivity and novel appreciation to male portraits, has earned him the Ihei Kimura Prize, Japan’s top award for photographic art. On this occasion, Eiki has chosen the title “Hong Kong Obscura” for this exhibition, in which he will specially produce a new series of photos purely about Hong Kong, capturing the city’s energy, including portraits of people, streets, life and soul.
Educated in Japan and Spain, Nobu is winner of the 7th Hiroshima Art Prize (Japan) who has long impressed the international art arena with his large-scale drawings and constructed figures. He is also a creative live performer into dance and street happenings that inject the breath of art into the pulse of the general public. Nobu has chosen the title “Shin” (“belief”) for this exhibition, which will show his latest black ink paintings depicting the vitality of the human figure, animals, spirits and nature, giving a dynamic interpretation of living and life.
A major highlight will fall on 17 May (Saturday) when Nobu conducts two live painting sessions entitled “Burn! Okonomix”, held at 11 am and 3 pm at Cattle Depot Artist Village. Inspired by “Okonomiyaki”, a traditional dish from his hometown Hiroshima, Nobu’s recipe will include authentic ingredients for okonomiyaki which he will artistically blend with black into onto a vast canvas plate. To use his own words, Nobu will “make people alive, smile with super taste new vitality painting”.
Absorption and Explosion is organized by Zen Foto Gallery, Tokyo, Japan, in collaboration with Videotage, a Hong Kong-based non-profit organization dedicated to promoting video and media art.
Technology has been leaping multiple boundaries at rapid speeds. From the development of the internet, to the evolution of smart-phones, and even to the new emergence of social networks, and online storing technology, our everyday lives have been connected in a way that we may no longer truly understand.
Coming on 28th March, Videotage presents the independent documentary film "Connected". The film explores how the human connection has evolved following technological development.
The screening will take place in Videotage (Unit 13, Cattle Depot Artist Village, 63 Ma Tau Kok Road), after which it will be followed by a discussion led by Professor Katrien Jacobs. We welcome everyone to join in and be connected!
Free Admission. Please fill in the form via the link below for registration!
由創辦威比獎(The Webby Award)到熱心支持全國離線日(The National Day of Unplugging)，導演Tiffany對現今人與人互相聯繫又不可分割的關係可謂非常關注及敏感。
(The International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences)的創辦人之一。作為一個著名的思想家和驅動者，Tiffany能夠透過風格獨特的電影、多元的講座和新穎的設計，傳達有關文化、科學、科技、生命等複雜慨念。
With wonderful heart and an impressive sense of scale, Tiffany Shlain’s vibrant and insightful documentary, Conne cted, explores the visible and invisible connections linking major issues of our time—the environment, consumption, population growth, technology, human rights, the global economy—while searching for her place in the world during a transformative time in her life.
Employing a splendidly imaginative combination of animation and archival footage, plus several surprises, Shlain constructs a chronological tour of Western modernization through the work of her late father, Leonard Shlain, a surgeon and best-selling author of Art and Physics and The Alphabet Versus the Goddess. With humor and irony, the Shlain family life merges with philosophy to create both a personal portrait and a proposal for ways we can move forward as a civilization. Connected illuminates the beauty and tragedy of human endeavor while boldly championing the importance of personal connectedness for understanding and coping with today’s global conditions.
Honored by Newsweek as one of the “Women Shaping the 21st Century,” Tiffany Shlain is a filmmaker, founder of The Webby Awards, and co-founder of The International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences. A celebrated thinker and catalyst, she’s known for her ability to illuminate complex ideas in culture, science, technology, and life through her unique films, dynamic talks, and innovative projects.
Katrien received a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature and Media from the University of Maryland at College Park. She has continued to work as a scholar and media artist who investigates the role of digital networks in people’s experiences with the body, art, and sexuality. She has lectured and published widely about pornography, censorship and media activism in Hong Kong and global media environments.
