Eiki Mori is an artist who has hosted over 20 exhibitions in major cities including Tokyo, Osaka, London, Taipei, Dusseldorf, Vienna, and San Giovanni Valdarno of Italy. His masterpieces include the reputed “Tokyo Boy Alone” and “Intimacy”, which brings superb sensitivity and novel appreciation to male portraits, has earned him the Ihei Kimura Prize, Japan’s top award for photographic art. On this occasion, Eiki has chosen the title “Hong Kong Obscura” for this exhibition, in which he will specially produce a new series of photos purely about Hong Kong, capturing the city’s energy, including portraits of people, streets, life and soul.

Educated in Japan and Spain, Nobu is winner of the 7th Hiroshima Art Prize (Japan) who has long impressed the international art arena with his large-scale drawings and constructed figures. He is also a creative live performer into dance and street happenings that inject the breath of art into the pulse of the general public. Nobu has chosen the title “Shin” (“belief”) for this exhibition, which will show his latest black ink paintings depicting the vitality of the human figure, animals, spirits and nature, giving a dynamic interpretation of living and life.

A major highlight will fall on 17 May (Saturday) when Nobu conducts two live painting sessions entitled “Burn! Okonomix”, held at 11 am and 3 pm at Cattle Depot Artist Village. Inspired by “Okonomiyaki”, a traditional dish from his hometown Hiroshima, Nobu’s recipe will include authentic ingredients for okonomiyaki which he will artistically blend with black into onto a vast canvas plate. To use his own words, Nobu will “make people alive, smile with super taste new vitality painting”.

Absorption and Explosion is organized by Zen Foto Gallery, Tokyo, Japan, in collaboration with Videotage, a Hong Kong-based non-profit organization dedicated to promoting video and media art.

Okonomix )》。

Connected" screening and discussion

Technology has been leaping multiple boundaries at rapid speeds. From the development of the internet, to the evolution of smart-phones, and even to the new emergence of social networks, and online storing technology, our everyday lives have been connected in a way that we may no longer truly understand.

Coming on 28th March, Videotage presents the independent documentary film "Connected". The film explores how the human connection has evolved following technological development.

The screening will take place in Videotage (Unit 13, Cattle Depot Artist Village, 63 Ma Tau Kok Road), after which it will be followed by a discussion led by Professor Katrien Jacobs. We welcome everyone to join in and be connected!

(The National Day of Unplugging),導演Tiffany對現今人與人互相聯繫又不可分割的關係可謂非常關注及敏感。

(The International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences)的創辦人之一。

Sypnosis:
With wonderful heart and an impressive sense of scale, Tiffany Shlain’s vibrant and insightful documentary, Conne cted, explores the visible and invisible connections linking major issues of our time—the environment, consumption, population growth, technology, human rights, the global economy—while searching for her place in the world during a transformative time in her life.
Employing a splendidly imaginative combination of animation and archival footage, plus several surprises, Shlain constructs a chronological tour of Western modernization through the work of her late father, Leonard Shlain, a surgeon and best-selling author of Art and Physics and The Alphabet Versus the Goddess. With humor and irony, the Shlain family life merges with philosophy to create both a personal portrait and a proposal for ways we can move forward as a civilization. Connected illuminates the beauty and tragedy of human endeavor while boldly championing the importance of personal connectedness for understanding and coping with today’s global conditions.

Director's biography:
Honored by Newsweek as one of the “Women Shaping the 21st Century,” Tiffany Shlain is a filmmaker, founder of The Webby Awards, and co-founder of The International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences. A celebrated thinker and catalyst, she’s known for her ability to illuminate complex ideas in culture, science, technology, and life through her unique films, dynamic talks, and innovative projects.

Following the ARRIVALS exhibition, Videotage is pleased to present ‘DEPARTURES’, a live sound performance by our current artist-in-residence Marco De Mutiis featuring sound artist Paul Yip. By using various set up of microphones, effects and software programming, the artists simply transforms ARRIVALS (a kinetic installation re-engineered from an old analogue split-flap departure board) into a unique sound instrument.

The live performance will feature a dialogue between the artists and the ARRIVALS artificial intelligence system. By mixing the original sound of the installation and the ”Transformed Sound” by the effects, the unique pure acoustic sound and the electro-acoustic artificial sound will echo into a special digitanalogue symphony.

The communication between these two very different counter parts present a language that merges a variety of mediums, such as text, memory, computer coding, acoustic and electronic sound, giving the audience a unique experience.

‘Arrivals’ is a site specific installation, created by Marco De Mutiis, as the result of his residency in Videotage. During the fuse:: artist-in-residence program, the artist developed an interest in the symptomatic disappearance of the neighboring Kai Tak old airport site. Kai Tak was home to Hong Kong International Airport until 1997, when the current Chek Lap Kok Airport took its place. The old site of Kai Tak airport is now being converted in a new site accommodating a new residential area, a cruise terminal and a subway station.

In a convulsive tranquility a re-engineered system of split flap mechanisms questions our perception of trace, memory and time. Wittingly zigzagging between the incumbency of text and sound, ‘Arrivals’ attempts to recreate a fragmented universe of personal memories, documents and archival records of Kai Tak, looking for bits and pieces of an identity that has been conveniently left unaddressed or simply turned into a legend of the distant past. It is a memory that is being denied to be accounted for, in a desire to turn the spotlight on the new achievements of the metropolis in the international arena, such as the new airport in Chek Lap Kok and the current development of the Kai Tak site.

The kinetic split flap modules, scattered around Videotage’s space, frantically turn, revealing letters, making words and sentences, creating and destroying meanings. These are fragments of text in constant mutation, where a custom made computer program looks through a database of data from archival documents, images and footage, as well as text taken from interviews made on the streets of ToKwaWan and Kowloon City. Through this process the cold archival data interweaves with the `imperfect memories, creating a hybrid and dynamic text based representation, which lies between a past that is being distanced and a past that is being remembered.

Flight codes, remnant memories of local shop owners going to the rooftops to try to ‘touch the planes’, destinations, resonances of airplanes passing by, airport’s gates and delay notices, this is the diorama of a collective memory that does not stop in front of the disarming confrontation with time. Time here is rendered visible and tangible at the same. It is in fact through the usage of time as a metronome of meaning that the installation sonically creates an immersive environment that triggers through the audio medium the memories of old airports.

His current interest focuses on the exploration of the concept of control of the transient and the ephemeral. Reynold Reynolds Solo Show
Curated by Lara Pan

Opening Reception: 17 May 2012, 15:00 - 20:00
Exhibition Period: 18 May - 24 June 2012 (Closed on Mondays and Public Holidays)
Opening Hour: 12:00 - 19:00
Venue: Videotage

Reynold Reynolds is one of the most daring and explorative experimental filmmakers to be seen in recent years within America. Preferring to use a 16mm and Super 8mm film to shoot, his works are normally considered as experimental and investigative towards the human experience.

"The Ability of the artist to explore and manipulate a delicate balance between different functions of mind such as memory, voluntary, and involuntary actions, delicately approaches an untouchable border line between space and time." - Curator Lara Pan

The solo show will feature five works: "The Drowning Room", "Burn" and "Secret Trilogy". The first two works are collaborative works between Reynold Reynolds and Patrick Jolley, which presents us a world where the actors are for a while, living in a moment of cinematographic "limbo". Representation is left behind and focus is on the confrontation of viewer with a primary stimulus of physical experience. "Secret Trilogy" features a three-part cycle exploring the imperceptible conditions that frame life. This trilogy is comprised of "Secret Machine", "Secret Life", and "Six Easy Pieces". Imagery of this trilogy has been fragmented by a mysterious process of creation inspired by the images of life breaking through regular flow of time, describing mystery of the strange forces of existence.

This is the first time VMAC (Videotage Media Art Collection) invites an overseas artist and guest curator for an exhibition.

The Artist

Reynold Reynolds was born in 1966 in Central Alaska. During his undergraduate schooling at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Reynolds studied Physics receiving a Bachelor's degree under the professorship of Carl Wieman (Physics Nobel Laureate 2001). Changing his focus to studio art he remained two more years in Boulder to study under experimental filmmaker Stan Brakhage. After moving to New York City Reynolds completed an M.F.A. at the School of Visual Arts. Influenced early on by philosophy and science, and working primarily with 16mm as an art medium, he has developed a film grammar based on transformation, consumption and decay. Detailed evolving symbols and allusive references create a powerful pictorial language based on Reynolds' analytical point of view. His depiction of people often makes us aware of the small frames we use to understand reality. By subtly altering the regular conditions of life and watching their effects, he transfers the experimental methods of science to filmmaking, where he frames reality in his laboratory and changes one variable at a time to reveal an underlying causality.
