“My artwork is sort of a story-telling of my life.”
Life is a multi-layered spectrum molded by different experiences, emotions, feelings, desires, ideas, beliefs and memories. Each day we are living out a new layer upon the layers of our collective life. Although not all layers are pleasant, an additional layer will strengthen our foundation, which in turn will help in our future growth.
‘This is all of me, and this has helped make me who I am (in my artwork).”
As we grow and mature as an individual, we realize that we have to accept all that has happened to us, whether good or bad. The embracing of the layers of our lives, denying none of them, makes us appreciate the miracle of our existence. Only then we will see the layers altogether and see the beauty of the whole.
Like his artworks, Noel de Guzman, the Hong Kong based Philippine artist has gone through many layers (experiences) in his life. Born in a privileged family, fortunes have laid away quickly when his parents business went bankrupt. He soon became a vendor in a public market, lived in an uncle’s garage, lost a job, and his investments. After having failed to launch a startup company, Noel resolutely decided to give up what he has/ had and kicked off his worldwide travel and volunteering works.
“I consider the misfortunes I have experienced in life as a way to strengthen ones character as well as my artwork presentation.”
Travel, long walks and charity works helped enrich Noel’s perspective of life. He traveled to many places around the world and took a departure from his painting styles experimenting with new materials, formats, techniques and concepts. He started exploring ideas between abstract and representational, among them manipulating digital images of nudes and burned canvasses with a torch. Noel’s penchant for hiking allowed him time for deep thoughts and reflection. Occasionally, he would be inspired by the colors and patterns of nature which sometimes be reflected on to his works.
This coming September/October, we are pleased to announce our first collaboration with Noel de Guzman at PubArt Gallery as well as his first solo show in 7 years, showcasing a new art style. He uses fabrics and fibers with acrylic paints resulting in multi-layered and heavily textured paintings. In fact, the multi-layers form our life so as to Noel’s brand new collection – “The Layers of Life”.

Cang Cang Dip
